On December 2, 2006, the 8th annual Takoma Park Alternative Gift Fair was held. Launched by interns at the Center for a New American Dream in 1998, the Fair is now sponsored by Alternative Gifts of Greater Washington. Entirely organized and run by volunteers, the event raised over $24,000 for local and global nonprofits in a mere 4 hours! The following Tuesday, an additional $5,000 was raised at the Front Page in Washington, DC.

On Wednesday, December 20, 2006, President Bush held a news conference. A brief excerpt:

As we work with Congress in the coming year to chart a new course in Iraq and strengthen our military to meet the challenges of the 21st century, we must also work together to achieve important goals for the American people here at home...

...The recent report on retail sales shows a strong beginning to the holiday shopping season across the country.
